Sydney Cleaning Frequency Index: How Often Do People Really Clean Their Homes?

Sydney cleaning frequency index custom graphic

Are other Sydneysiders cleaning their homes more often than you? It’s hard to say. The truth is, cleaning frequency varies wildly across the city, not just by lifestyle, but by suburb, too. For example, Sydney’s North Shore and Lower North Shore suburbs are leading the charge when it comes to regular cleaning services, while deep cleaning remains a stronghold in the East. It hasn’t always been this way, however; a lot of factors have changed the way people prioritise house cleaning, especially when it comes to outsourcing the work to professional cleaning services.

So, in order to have a clearer picture of how often Sydney residents clean their homes, Maidforyou analysed several bookings across the city, and put together this enlightening Sydney Cleaning Frequency Index. It takes a suburb-by-suburb look at how often locals are really getting their homes cleaned, and what’s driving those choices.

How the Index Was Built

The Sydney Cleaning Frequency Index is based on internal booking data from Maidforyou, covering hundreds of residential cleaning appointments across the city. We analysed the type of cleaning service (standard or deep clean), the frequency (weekly, fortnightly, monthly, or one-time), and the suburb where each booking occurred.

This analysis shows the overall cleaning behaviour of Sydneysiders, not just based on assumptions or surveys, but on actual cleaning service usage. From deep cleans to recurring bookings, here’s what the data reveals.

The North Shore: Sydney’s Most Consistent Cleaners

When it comes to routine cleaning, Sydney’s North and Lower North Shore suburbs come out on top. Suburbs like St Ives, Clontarf, Mosman, and Lane Cove hold the highest percentage of regular cleaning plans, with over 50% of bookings in these areas being repeat services.

Whether it’s weekly touch-ups or fortnightly refreshes, residents in these areas have proven they like to keep their homes consistently clean.

These stats also indicate a strong preference for outsourcing the task of home cleaning, which many individuals find to be tiresome and mundane. Numerous households in the North and Lower North Shore are maintaining recurring cleaning schedules with professional cleaning services, thereby creating a steady flow of business for local cleaners.

Eastern Suburbs: Routine Deep Cleaning Capital

While the North Shore’s demand for regular house cleaning is consistent, Sydney’s Eastern Suburbs, including Bondi, Coogee, Bronte, and Vaucluse, favour deep cleaning services instead.

Our internal data shows that a whopping 63% of bookings in the Eastern Suburbs are deep cleans. What’s more interesting is how frequently these deep cleans occur. Unlike most parts of the city, where deep cleans are treated as one-time or seasonal tasks like spring cleaning, residents in these regions often book deep cleans as part of a fortnightly or regular cleaning plan.

This shift toward frequent deep cleaning over standard cleaning was largely influenced by post-COVID cleaning trends, in addition to high standards of living, end of lease cleaning demands, and short-term rental turnovers.

From sanitising high-touch surfaces to steam-cleaning carpets and upholstery, these professional appointments go beyond the basics and reveal what residents in the East truly prioritise when it comes to household cleanliness.

Western Suburbs: Event-Based and Monthly Services Remain Popular

In contrast, many residents in Western Sydney suburbs such as Blacktown, Liverpool, and Mount Druitt frequently book event-based cleaning services, including end of lease cleans, pre/post-event cleanups, and spring cleans. Additionally, monthly appointments are also common, along with standard fortnightly cleans.

Overall, Western Sydney sees a lower volume of recurring cleaning plans compared to the North and Eastern suburbs. However, the stats are slowly changing. As more families juggle work and home life, the idea of outsourcing cleaning, even just once a month, is becoming more attractive. Moreover, a monthly professional clean is an effective way to stay on top of household maintenance and cleanliness.

What’s Fueling the Demand for More Frequent Cleaning?

Across Sydney, internal booking data reveals a steady increase in both frequency and quality of cleaning services. Here’s what’s driving that growth:

  • Lack of time – Longer work hours and family responsibilities mean outsourcing is a necessity, not a luxury.
  • Health and hygiene – COVID transformed how people think about germs and cleanliness.
  • Lifestyle upgrades – With more people working from home, maintaining a fresh space has become part of everyday well-being.
  • Consistency and convenience: Recurring cleaning plans offer peace of mind, reduce the mental and physical load of chores, and help maintain a consistent standard of cleanliness.

These perks are clearly reflected in booking behaviours, especially in suburbs like Mosman and Bondi, where frequent, high-quality cleans are now the norm.
