Cleaning Tips, Guides & Resources
The Whole House Cleaning Kit You Need
Household cleaning is easier, quicker, and more effective when you have a cleaning kit with essential tools and products to depend on. Ideally, a well-organised cleaning kit will contain a limited number of items and yet, have everything you need to clean your house in a satisfactory manner.
It should be pointed out that large items such as a vacuum cleaner, broom/dustpan, and mop are all essential tools in home cleaning, however, they are not a part of one’s cleaning kit as the kit itself is simply a basket or tote bag with must-have cleaners and tools.
So, what are the essential cleaning tools and products that make up the perfect cleaning kit for your home? Read on to find out!
1. Microfibre Cloths
There is a reason why cleaning experts highly recommend the use of microfibre cloths in household cleaning. Owing to their level of absorbency and fine synthetic fibres, they are the perfect cleaning cloth to wipe both, damp or dry surfaces, and are commonly used to clean kitchen counters and dusty furniture.
2. Scrubbers
Nothing works as well as a scrubber when it comes to certain cleaning tasks. For example, cleaning the kitchen sink with a cloth will work just fine, but a scrubber will help you get the job done better. They are perfect for bathroom and kitchen cleaning where surfaces need a good scrub down to remove stains and grime. You should have at least 2 types of scrubbers in your cleaning kit – 1 abrasive and 1 non-abrasive.
3. Sponge
Unlike a scrubber, a sponge is more absorbent and, of course, softer. This is exactly the combination you need for cleaning tasks that involve more water than usual. These include washing window exteriors, cleaning gas stovetops and surfaces that are prone to scratches. It’s important to invest in a good quality sponge as the inferior kind gets ripped or shredded rather easily.
4. Multi-Purpose Scrub Brush
Just for your cleaning kit, we advise buying a medium-sized scrub brush that you can clean various surfaces with. Of course, if you intend on using the brush to clean the exterior of a toilet bowl, or the floor (for spot-cleaning), you will need separate brushes. Other areas of home cleaning that require the use of a scrub brush include cleaning carpets, wall tiles, and bathroom counters.
5. Toothbrush
A toothbrush is one of those cleaning tools that most people don’t think about until they are presented with a cleaning task that calls for it (like the fine cleaning of grout and tiles). The reason why it is part of our cleaning essentials list is owed to the fact that several spaces are overlooked while cleaning, simply because they are hard to reach. A toothbrush can help you clean those narrow spaces and gaps you’ve been neglecting for too long!
6. All-Purpose Cleaner
As the name suggests, you can use an all-purpose cleaner virtually anywhere in your house! From grime in the kitchen to stains on your living room furniture; all you need is an all-purpose cleaner and a microfibre cloth to get household surfaces quickly and effectively cleaned up. Regardless of whether you make your own cleaner or purchase one, it’s best to have the cleaning solution in a spray bottle for more convenience when using it.
7. Glass Cleaner
Although some individuals use other cleaning products or homemade cleaners as a substitute, glass cleaner is one of the quickest and most effective products when it comes to cleaning windows, glass surfaces, and mirrors. Moreover, a bottle of glass cleaner lasts longer than other cleaners because you only need a few spritzes to get a wide area of glass cleaned up.
8. Furniture Polish
If you have any wooden furniture in your home, furniture polish is definitely recommended! It is typically not considered a cleaning kit essential since you can use an all-purpose product on wooden surfaces; however, nothing cleans and shines wood like furniture polish does. Simply wipe the surface and polish it for a gleaming effect.
9. Floor Cleaner
While you will still need to grab a mop and a bucket from somewhere, your cleaning kit should include the floor cleaner. Apart from using it for a thorough or daily clean of your entire flooring, it’s good to have the product handy even when you intend on doing other cleaning tasks; if you notice a stain on the floor that requires spot cleaning, the cleaner is right there! Hardwood floors can be a pain to maintain and clean, using the wrong cleaner can damage your floors, be sure to check the instructions on the back before use.
10. Disinfectant Wipes
Contrary to popular belief, most cleaning products DO NOT kill germs. With disinfectant wipes, you don’t have to worry about having extra cloths or yet another cleaning product in your kit. Moreover, to avoid transferring germs, some surfaces like the toilet seat, doorknobs and faucets are best cleaned with (eco-friendly) single-use disinfectant wipes.
With that, your house cleaning kit of essential cleaning tools and products is complete! All you need to do from here on out is re-stock and replace cleaners and cleaning tools as and when needed so that your cleaning kit is always ready to assist you!
