Cleaning Tips, Guides & Resources
How to Clean Your Dyson Cyclone v10 Filter

There are more reasons than one as to why Dyson is a leading manufacturer of vacuum cleaners; they offer many different high-performing products that are generally designed to be compact and convenient to use. However, while Dyson vacuum cleaners are built to last for many years, without proper care and maintenance, you will be left with an inefficient appliance that provides very disappointing results.
Like any other vacuum cleaner, if you have recently purchased the Dyson Cyclone v10, it is your responsibility to carry out regular cleaning and maintenance to keep it running smoothly. This typically begins with cleaning your Dyson filter as frequently as needed.Â
How Often Should You Clean Your Dyson Filter?
While the company recommends monthly cleaning of the Dyson Cyclone v10 vacuum cleaner filter, it should be noted that the frequency of basic cleaning largely depends on usage and other factors. For example, if you vacuum daily, you might find that the filter gets clogged with debris rather quickly. This is particularly the case in homes with wall-to-wall carpeting or large carpets and area rugs which are prone to dust, dirt, and fine debris.
Similarly, if you have pets and vacuum your floor and upholstery regularly, you will definitely need to clean the Dyson filter more than once a month. To understand how often you should be cleaning a vacuum cleaner filter, it is advisable to keep a check on the filter every few sessions; that way you will have a better idea of when it’s time for a clean as per your individual usage.
Lastly, if you find that the performance of the appliance has suddenly dropped, this is a good indication that the filter needs cleaning or replacing. The good news, however, is that even if your Dyson filter requires cleaning more often than you thought it would, it is super quick and easy to do before or after a session! Read on to find out how to clean your Dyson vacuum filter.
Steps to Clean the Dyson Cyclone v10 Filter
If you have owned any of the older models in this particular range of Dyson vacuum cleaners, you will find that the v10 filter is a little different and therefore, the cleaning method also differs, albeit only slightly.Â
To clean your Dyson Cyclone v10 filter, follow the steps below.Â
Step 1: Remove the Filter
Like most cordless vacuum cleaners from Dyson, the filter in the v10 model is located at the top of the cyclone chamber near the handle. To remove it, (while the appliance is turned off), hold the filter and give a little twist; you should be able to pull it upward and remove it very easily in this manner. If needed, refer to the user manual for the exact location and directions on how to remove your Dyson filter. Before you move on to the next step, however, take a look at the filter housing and give it a quick wipe with a microfibre cloth to remove dust buildup on the surface.
Step 2: Knock Off Debris
With a little shaking and tapping, you can remove loose debris from the filter. Do this while holding it upside down over a dustbin or newspaper for proper disposal of the dirt and debris. If you have a handheld vacuum cleaner with a soft brush attachment, this is great for quickly cleaning off dust and dirt from the outer and inner material of the filter. Alternatively, you can use a soft toothbrush to dislodge and remove debris from your Dyson filter.
Step 3: Wash the Filter
For a thorough wash, it is important to remove as much debris from the filter before running it under water. So, before you begin, double check that there is no hair, fur, or other visible debris trapped in the filter; if present, remove it with a soft brush or pluck it with your fingers. To wash your Dyson filter, hold it under a faucet of cold running water and gently squeeze the filter material between your fingers to release dirt. Alternate this technique with allowing water to fill up the filter while holding it upside down, and swirling the water around to loosen up dirt clinging to the material. Continue washing the filter in this manner until the water runs clear.
Step 4: Dry the Filter Completely
It is important to wait until the filter is completely dry before fitting it back into your Dyson Cyclone v10 vacuum cleaner. To help speed this along, wipe the filter with a dry towel to absorb some of the water, and then leave it to air-dry on a rack for at least 24 hours. You can also keep it outside in a clean, shaded spot to dry the material faster. Use your fingers to double check that the filter is completely dry before screwing it back onto the vacuum cleaner.Â
Because the filter is an integral part of a vacuum cleaner, keeping it clean is your best bet to maintain the appliance’s overall performance. So, be sure to refer to the steps above for complete guidance on how to clean a Dyson Cyclone v10 filter in particular, and how often you should be doing it!
